You had a great summer away from work. You imagine that, after a vacation, you come back to work reenergized and refreshed, able to be your true productive self. But when you finally do get back to work, you find yourself feeling lethargic, both physically and psychologically.
The longer the holiday, the harder the readjustment to your working life. So, how do you beat those holiday blues? Let's take a look at some of the ways that help.

Avoid eating oily instant food. Eat more fresh fruit and veg.

Over summer, cooking took a backseat as you ate well, but poorly, with most food being oily, processed and instant! Eating oily and salty food a lot, such as BBQ, chicken and fish, slows down the metabolism and exacerbates fatigue.

That’s why, when you get back from your holiday, it’s best to avoid oily food and increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetable to shake off any lingering tiredness. Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that combat fatigue, increase metabolism and help your energy come back.

Avoid working too hard. Remember to do light stretching.

"I’ve had my fill of fun on holiday: now, let the work begin!" Nope. You may be under the impression that, as you had such a good time away from the office on your summer holiday, you now need, upon returning to your desk, to work harder than ever as recompense. Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is, any sudden change in your biorhythm will lead you to feel tired in both body and mind, resulting in deteriorating work efficiency.

Though you may not have realized it, you no doubt spent more energy than usual on your vacation, for example on the long drive, on the flight or simply on having fun in the water. If you work too much with this fatigue, you cannot escape eventually becoming easily tired. That’s why you need to have 5 or 10-minute breaks during your work to stretch and relax your body.

Remember that a short break will actually improve your work efficiency.

Make sure your desk stays tidy.

"Whenever I get back to a cluttered desk, it’s hard to escape a feeling of despair, particularly after returning from holiday. What can I do?"

Well, why not reorganize your desk? Decorating your desk with a pot or frame, rearranging the stuff on your desk or simply replacing your old mouse pad, wallpaper of your PC or diary with a new one will all serve as a meaningful and ultimately helpful diversion.

Escape boredom by bringing a change to your work environment and you will find you are then able to work in a better mood.

Avoid indifference. Check receipts.

If you’re still struggling with the holiday blues when back at work, then perhaps the most effective measure is simply to look back over your receipts and check your bank statement. Money doesn’t lie and you’ll soon find yourself facing the honest experience of your overspending when on holiday. Your surprise at the total spend for the holiday may bring you back to reality and realize, with this, that you must work to earn a living. This measure, termed 'motivate yourself with a stimulus!', may be harsh, but it is effective.

Play hard, work hard! This will make you a really good office worker.
